Biometric passports for Republic of Ghana

Tracking the movement of people in and out of a country can be a daunting task, especially when relying upon old systems and manual inspection of identification materials. Biometric documents provide a much more efficient and effective method to control population travel, especially when those systems are linked across governments and agencies. To comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and remain a member country in the organization, the Ghana government worked with Innovatrics to design, build, and implement a biometric document system to control immigration and emigration across Ghana’s borders.

The pilot registers up to 1 Million beneficiaries. These beneficiaries` fingerprints are checked for duplicate registrations by means of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Each registered beneficiary is issued with a smart card containing details and fingerprints. The card is used for time-and-attendance , when they present themselves for employment under this scheme. Bank accounts were opened for each beneficiary and payments are made directly into accounts to reduce fraud and cash in circulation.
