Fingerprint-Based Taxpayer ID System Optimizes Tax Collection and Other Services

Ethiopia | Government

The Ethiopian Customs and Tax Authority (CTA) has started a project for a fingerprint-based taxpayer ID system. The new fingerprint identification system started in Addis Ababa and continued to towns in regional states.

The authorities collected 1.5 million taxpayers’ fingerprints within eight months. The initial phase involved the registration of more than half a million businessmen, civil servants and about 180,000 government university students enrolled in the cost sharing programs.

Under the current Tax Identification Number (TIN) system, about 433,000 taxpayers have been registered across the nation. According to Ethiopian law, a taxpayer has to have only one TIN to optimize tax collection and other related services.
