Vodafone Qatar has deployed Innovatrics identity verification technology and launched a fully remote onboarding journey for SIM and eSIM registration, as well as mobile wallet sign-ups, through a digital flow that takes under one minute. The solution expands the operator’s remote onboarding capacity and has helped it serve large numbers of visitors during the FIFA World Cup, when many needed fast access to mobile services.
Working with Innovatrics and integration partner Zentity, Vodafone Qatar now uses a single eKYC platform across key customer journeys. Identity checks run in real time, while KYC rules and data residency requirements in Qatar remain in place.
Before the change, customers had to visit a store, present an ID, and complete SIM registration and KYC in person. That limited how fast Vodafone Qatar could activate new services and tied growth to branch capacity.
The company first introduced remote identity verification in its iPay mobile wallet. Customers scan their ID document, take a selfie and complete KYC in the app or a web browser. Facial biometrics match the selfie with the portrait on the ID. The system reads Arabic ID cards and international passports, so it works for residents and visitors.
Once this model was in place, Vodafone extended the same platform to SIM and eSIM registration. Ahead of the World Cup, new users could activate mobile services through the app without visiting a shop.
The setup also enabled Instant SIM. It is a first-of-its-kind service that lets customers pick up a physical SIM from 2,600+ locations, use limited connectivity to open the onboarding app even without a data bundle, and complete registration remotely with the same identity stack.
The new platform acts as a shared identity layer for Vodafone Qatar. Remote verification with passive liveness, deepfake and video injection detection is able to confirm that each user is a real person and that the selfie is not a replay or screen recording. The solution runs on-premises in Vodafone’s own data center and connects to existing systems through APIs.
eKYC now supports more than initial onboarding. The same process is used for mobile money account opening, eSIM downloads, SIM swaps, changes to ID documents, migrations from prepaid to postpaid, and plan changes. Instead of building separate KYC flows, new products plug into the existing identity layer.
By consolidating identity verification on a single biometric platform, Vodafone Qatar has set up a repeatable model for digital services in the telecoms industry.
