Biometric data interchange formats

ISO/IEC 19794 defines how biometric samples are encoded so a record produced by one system can be read correctly by another, with one part per modality — finger, face, iris, and so on. It is the format layer behind most national ID and travel document programs: the first-generation parts from 2005–2007 still underpin ICAO ePassports, while a second generation from 2011 added a common record header and XML encoding. The series is gradually being superseded by ISO/IEC 39794 (below), but its parts remain in force and in wide use.
